I got an email from a lacrosse goalie recently who knew where the “five” hole was but wasn’t sure about where the other holes were.

Well…I don’t know.

I could do the research here but I don’t have the time. But I’m going to guess that somewhere in the hockey world this whole thing began. There was a coach who numbered the holes on the goalie. So you would have a space over the left and right shoulders, outside the left and right foot, and then between the legs.

Between the legs is the five hole. As for the rest of the holes? I have no idea. And when I asked some of my friends they had no idea either so I’m thinking that the original numbering system has been lost but everyone can remember that between the legs it the five hole.

That’s my best guess. Anyone else know, or have a preference, for the numbers?
