Question: I was just wondering if you knew if a brine F55 handle would fit with the holes lined up on a STX Proton Power, I would like to use it for next years practice. If you could also describe how to drill a hole in a lacrosse shaft. Please respond.

Answer: Luke I’m not sure if that F55 is going to have the holes for both the STX and the Brine heads. Lots of them do have both holes now, I’m just not sure about that specific shaft.
You’ll just have to call a local lacrosse store or call the guys at www.ComLax.net. They can help you right away.

In case it doesn’t have a hole you’ll need to drill that F55 shaft. You’ll need a drill with a drill bit that is just smaller than the screw you are going to use, and a tap. You’ll want to put the head on the F55 shaft all the way and mark the hole with a pen. Then take the F55 shaft off. (Do NOT drill the shaft while it’s in the head. You’ll just bore out the hole in the head which will cause it to loosen later. NOT GOOD)

Once you have the shaft off you’ll need that tap you bought (it can be a nail as too.) And a hammer. Line up the tap, or the nail, and take the hammer and “tap” it hard into the shaft. What this will do is make a small dent in the shaft that the drill bit will be able to bite into. Without it the drill bit will skate around the shaft and you won’t get a centered hole.

Once you have the tap hole in place take your drill, with the proper sized bit, and start drilling. You’re going to need a buddy to hold the stick or preferably a vise to hold the shaft while you drill.

Go slow to start but then get that drill bit moving quickly so that it will go quickly through the F55. Be careful when it goes through the metal because it may “bite” or catch and the drill can torque pretty hard. If that happens you’ll want to just put the drill in reverse and back it out. Sometimes you can stop there and put the F55 in the head and work the screw in from there. Should be fine. If not just work the drill again and get that hole a little bigger.

Good luck!
