Question: Jonathan,
I am a Goalie Dad, my son plays at the Peewee level (11 & 12 year old boys) up in Canada (Montreal, Quebec) He is a first year Goalie and is playing for Team Quebec in the Canadian Nationals this year in Whitby Ontario.
I am interested in any tips you can provide in getting him more mobile in the net.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
thanks
Tom Cutler
Answer: Tom, mobility at that age is a direct result of physical fitness and strength. The biggest leaps you will see in performance at that age is due to their increases in strength. My recommendation is to enroll him in some sort of sport that emphasizes strength and flexibility. The order goes like this: 1) Gymnastics 2) Wrestling 3) Kung Fu or Taekwondo 4) Football (American Football not soccer)
You can enroll him in the gym for personal training or strength work but I would rather he focus on movement and not muscles at this age.
For a great resource go check out www.LTAD.ca The worlds leading expert in long term athlete development wrote the paper. He’s in Vancouver.
Hope that helps. Let me know what direction you head in as I’m always look to hear how things turn out for our athletes.
All the best,
