Ok, we all saw the goalie this weekend who had the neon green mesh in his stick. (I’m already getting emails about it.)

The principle is this, shooters, under stress will have their eyes drawn to the brightest thing in the cage and will shoot at that first. (i.e. a bright green goalie stick) This will allow the goalie to make a nice easy save because the shots will be taken right at the goalies stick.

While I don’t doubt this is possible, I believe that the goalie stick idea is a bad one. If the object is too bright, which I think this is, players will shoot elsewhere which negates the idea in the first place.

I’m still a big believer in having a stick that blends in with the color of the netting in the cage. If your cages are bright white then you’ll probably want to go with a white mesh. If they are black you’ll want black mesh. Why? Because that is what the shooter is looking for. And if your stick is the same color you might be able to sneak up on them.

Still, the top shooters are going to scout you and scout you well. They will know your tendencies and will know what hand you are. So throwing in a lime green mesh pocket is only going to draw attention to it and that’s something we don’t want.
