Question: jonathan-

Hello. I’m Emily and I just finished my freshman season. We play most of our games on turf and as a goalie I was wondering whether it would be best to use cleats, turfs, or sneakers. On my team it is pretty evenly split between the three.

Thanks a ton

Answer: Hey there Emily.  It depends on the turf.  If it’s the really short stuff you can use sneakers or turf shoes.  Turf shoes if it’s raining, sneakers if it’s not.  You want a cross trainer or basketball shoe, not a running shoe.  The elevated heel can cause ankle sprains etc.

If it’s wet you’ll want the turf shoes but you can use the turf shoes in both wet and dry conditions.  They have the small heel as well so it’s a good multipurpose shoe.

If you play on the turf that has the rubber pellets between the turf you can wear the cleats but personally I don’t like them.  I use molded football cleats.  Not the screw in type but they have smaller cleats on the bottom so they dig in but I don’t feel like I’m standing on nails.

Hope that helps.  Let me know what type of turf you are on and I can clarify for you if you need it.
