When it comes to wearing protective equipment for a lacrosse goalie, there is no more important piece of equipment than the lacrosse goalie cup.  Yes, THAT cup.  There is nothing worse than getting hit in the squares (or the lady-squares) and having to take a few minutes on all fours composing yourself.

In today’s lacrosse goalie tip we discuss just what protection a lacrosse goalie should where as they get shot at by faster and faster shooters.

What Cup Should A Lacrosse Goalie Wear?

Question: Hey Jonathan,
I’ll be a freshmen in high school next year, and was wondering what you might recommend in terms of a goalie cup or goalie pants. I’ve gotten by so far with just a normal cup, but the shots are getting faster and I’ve taken shots in the legs and cup a couple of times. Someone suggested that I use a ice hockey goalie cup. I tried lacrosse goalie pants, but they were to restrictive for me. What would you recommend?

Answer: Greg great questions. You’re going to want to get a hockey goalie cup. It’s the only way to go. They feel cumbersome to start but if it has a hinge in it where your waist is it will get comfortable over time. I have one by DnR. Have had it for years and it’s awesome. Warrior now makes a brand called the Nutt Hutt and you can find it here.

My other recommendation is buy some football pants with thigh pads and knee pads. Those are the best in my opinion. They fit great, don’t slide down your leg if they fit right, and if your shorts are big enough no one even knows you’re wearing them. I highly recommend them.

If you don’t play football ask your athletic director where he buys football pants for the team. Usually there is a store near by that sells them. You can go try them on with all the different sizes to make sure they fit real well.

Little tip, I actually turned the thigh pads backwards in mine because they covered more of the area between my legs. I found I would get hit on the inside of the thigh more than the outside so that little switch in the pads really helped.

Hope that helps!
